This week, Aneesh Chopra, the first Federal Chief Technology Officer, disused the modernization of healthcare IT with Smarter Planet’s Tim O’Reilly.
Under the guidance of Aneesh, the Obama Administration has invested $20 million in distributing rewards to hospitals that are become more modern. Aneesh believes that the fundamental first step in modernizing healthcare IT, a passion of his, is that if a patient wants it, they are entitled to a electronic copy of their medical record. Aneesh plans to overhaul the health care system by using technology to better engage with patients and physicians; technology in the medical community is no longer just for internal use.
By building attainable, minimal database systems to use in the medical market place, Aneesh hopes to create a broader and more innovative forum; giving the healthcare IT community more efficient and accessible health information that is readily available to patients and their doctors.
Take away: Transparency and data feedback within the healthcare community is the basic foundation for modernization within the medical community. The ability to have an informed debate about the future of the US healthcare system is Aneesh’s first step.
